RAID Server Data Recovery from a Fire Damaged Office

Date: 07-17-2013
Data Recovery Client : Software Development Company
Hard Drive Type : (3) 250GB Seagate Baracudas
OS Type : Windows 2003
Initial Problem : Fire damage to server.
Resolution: The requested files were recoverable.

Background on the Data Recovery Call
Our San Diego, California Service Center received a frantic call by company in the area who had experienced damage to their server due to a fire. This particular RAID server hosted the development environment for several key applications for the company. Due to all the heat and smoke damage in their data center, they had no viable working back-ups. ADR Data Recovery picked up the hard drives at the customer's location and returned to the lab to begin the emergency data recovery.

The Recovery Process
When equipment is damaged by fire, there are unique proprietary methods which ADR Data Recovery uses. In the clean room, it was discovered that the drives needed hardware replacement parts. Luckily, the server had not caught on fire, but the components were heated to a point of failure.

Overview of the steps involved

  • In-lab assessment of usable parts.
  • Cleaning and replacement of parts.
  • Virtually rebuilding and mounting RAID volume.
  • Sending the customer a file list of what can be recovered.
